Our Puppy Picking Process

Welcome to Canyon Rim Kennel!

We are glad you chose/are considering to get your Wirehaired Vizsla from us. Our application process is a little different than other kennels. We really like to schedule a time to talk and chat to see what it is that you are looking for in your future pup. We pride ourselves in producing dogs that can become great hunting companions as well as your family’s next adventure buddy. If you have not contacted Kagen to schedule a time to talk, please do so now. It is in this phone call that we like to answer any questions you may have and get to know one another a little better.

At our kennel we are committed to finding the puppy suited for you. We like to find out what you’re looking to do with the puppy (ex: hunting, running, show, companion, breeding program) as this helps us to look for personalities and qualities in your future puppy. We also like to know whether you’re looking for a male or female and what your preferences are in the appearance of the puppy. This can be tough as litters can vary widely in the appearance of the pups. Some pups can look as smooth as a normal vizsla without a whisker on its chin, while others may look like a furry hairball. Please be aware that our picking process favors those that have put down a $300 deposit. There is still a possibility that you could receive a later pick and a pup that doesn’t look the way you may have wanted. We will, however, do our best to make sure everyone is happy.

In order to make this process fair, we have to make sure it is understood by everyone. Please read carefully!

We do not hold spots in the picking process until we have a deposit. PLEASE ENSURE YOU HAVE RECIEVED A CONFIRMATION TEXT THAT WE HAVE RECIEVED YOUR DEPOSIT. Once received, your spot will be held. This does not guarantee you will receive a specific puppy, but that you will receive a particular spot in the puppy picking process. This means that if you were the first to send in a deposit for a particular litter, you will have the first picking spot for a male or female pup (depending on your preference). If you were the second person to send in a deposit, then you will be second in line to pick your puppy…and so on and so forth until the last puppy is picked. Because of this order of the picking, we do not hold spots for a specific puppy nor guarantee that any particular puppy will be available to you. If you are unable or unsure if you want to put down a deposit we do have a contact list that we contact whenever we have pups available.

The best time to pick your puppy is around the 5-8 week mark. The best advice is to be patient and if it is your turn to pick, let us know as soon as you can on your choice. There are times when we might need you to make a choice on a pup from video, pictures, and/or a video call (depending on your location, number in the picking line, or if you are unable to visit prior to pick-up because of your location). If this is the case, we will do our best to help answer any questions you may have to help ease the stress of the picking process.

Once we have received your deposit, we will need to start finding a pickup date that will work for both of us. We generally like to send pups home the closest to 8 weeks since after this point, we feel that we are unable to keep up with the needs that this age of puppy requires. We do, however, understand that life is busy and complicated and so it can be difficult to make it around that time. We will generally schedule your pickup date anytime between 7-9 weeks of age.  After 9 weeks, we will charge a boarding fee.

We also recognize it can be difficult to find transportation for your puppy to its new home. This can, at times, be the hardest obstacle (even harder than choosing a pup). In the past we have used various modes of transportation. We have shipped using the airlines as well as ground shippers. Some may fly in and pick up their puppy and fly with them home. Many times, we have received a question of meeting halfway to shorten a puppy owner’s travel time. We have done so in the past and don’t mind doing it if everything lines up. This all depends on the time of pickup. As pickup will be really busy trying to coordinate with everyone, we don’t guarantee this option so please plan accordingly.

We have created this process in the hopes that it will make it fair for everyone, and we try to be accommodating. This is a big decision and can be stressful trying to get everything in a puppy that you want. We are excited to guide you through the process, and enjoy seeing the pups in new homes becoming part of your family. We like to point out that some core attributes of these dogs are their personalities and willingness to please. Regardless of their appearance, when given the attention and training that they need these dogs will be able to live up to what the breed is known for personality-wise: a dog who will love you and your family unconditionally.
