What is the temperament of a Wirehaired Vizsla?

Energetic, expressive, affectionate, highly intelligent, gentle, sensitive, and eager to please are some words that one might use to describe a Wirehaired Vizsla. This breed was originally created by hunters in Hungary that wanted for a small game hunting dog with a thicker and more durable coat. This was done by crossing Vizslas with a German Wirehaired Pointer along with a few other breeds along the way. Because of this background, these dogs have a very high prey drive. However, these dogs are well-rounded and do well in hunting as well as non-hunting situations.

The Wirehaired Vizsla is a very versatile dog. They have a very high intelligence capacity. which makes them highly trainable when trained correctly. They are also known as Velcro dog, meaning they create strong attachments to their owners. Because of this these traits, these dogs may an excellent service dog or even just an excellent oversized cuddly lap dog.

One must understand the temperament of a Wirehaired Vizsla before bringing one home to the family. It’s important that one knows that they are sensitive dogs. Because of this, it’s important that the owner of a Wirehaired Vizsla presents oneself as a calm, respectable leader, with clear boundaries, minimizing the use of a harsh voice, and physical punishment. Instead, these dogs do very well with positive reinforcement-namely through praise and small treats.
